This an example of the ancient art of Japanese Raku pottery.

Raku is a process in which a pottery piece is removed from the kiln while red hot and subjected to post-firing reduction, called smoking, by being placed in containers of combustible materials or in this example's case thrown in a snow bank during the Winter months. Thus the crackling effect in the glaze.

This bowl, made to look oriental, is approximately five inches high and six inches across.
